Helldivers 2 Faces Mixed Steam Reviews as Arrowhead Promises Performance Fixes

Helldivers 2, one of this year’s most talked-about multiplayer shooters, has recently seen its Steam rating slide to “mixed” following a wave of performance complaints. The game, which initially launched in February 2024 to massive success and an enthusiastic fanbase, is now facing criticism from PC players struggling with stability, lag, and optimization problems.
Arrowhead CEO Shams Jorjani recently addressed these concerns directly on Discord, admitting that the game’s performance “isn’t where it should be.” While he reassured players that the development team is actively working on improvements, no clear timeline was given for when the fixes will be fully rolled out. Despite several recent patches, many players still report stuttering, crashes, and poor optimization, leading to frustration across the community.
In the past 30 days, only about 69% of Steam reviews have been positive, highlighting a noticeable decline in player satisfaction. Some users have specifically criticized Helldivers 2’s large PC file size, limited SSD performance benefits, and persistent technical hiccups. Others claim the studio has been focusing too much on story expansions and the Xbox version, leaving PC optimization behind.
Interestingly, the game is still finding commercial success in other areas. When Helldivers 2 arrived on Xbox in late August, it managed to sell nearly one million copies within its first week, becoming the best-selling paid game on Microsoft’s platform. This momentum shows that while performance issues are hurting its PC reputation, the franchise still maintains strong appeal among console players.
This isn’t the first time Helldivers 2 has had to weather negative feedback. Earlier in the year, the game was review-bombed due to server problems, weapon balancing controversies, and complaints about limited enemy variety. Even before that, it faced backlash over PlayStation Network requirements and matchmaking bugs. Despite these setbacks, Helldivers 2 has proven resilient, bouncing back after each wave of criticism.
For now, Arrowhead’s challenge lies in regaining the trust of its PC community. While the overall lifetime reviews remain “mostly positive” (and “very positive” for English-language feedback), the recent dip underscores how crucial consistent performance and stability are for long-term success. If the developers can deliver meaningful optimizations soon, Helldivers 2 may once again rally its community and restore confidence. Until then, players will be keeping a close eye on whether promised improvements actually materialize.
