From the very beginning of ARC Raiders’ development, the team at Embark Studios made it clear that they wanted to create more than a visually impressive shooter. They were aiming for a game where immersion wasn’t simply atmospheric but directly tied into moment‑to‑moment gameplay. In one of the latest episodes, creative director Stefan Strandberg reveals the foundation of this design approach. Why ARC Raiders Chooses Physics Over Health Bars

In many shooters, health bars are essential. They show players how close an enemy is to being defeated or how long a battle will last. But for Embark Studios, relying on UI indicators created a barrier between the player and the world. Instead, the team wanted fights to be grounded in physical responses that could be seen, heard, and interpreted naturally.

Strandberg summarized this philosophy with a simple but compelling idea:

“Allow the things in there to be real.”

In other words, if the machines in ARC Raiders are designed to behave like functional, physical objects, then their reactions to damage should be meaningful. Instead of reducing a health bar, shooting an enemy should alter the machine itself. This approach not only creates visual excitement but also deepens immersion by making the gameplay feel intuitive.

For example, when players target a drone’s thruster and successfully destroy it, the machine instantly loses its ability to stabilize or fly. The destruction isn’t cosmetic — it directly alters the machine’s behavior. As Strandberg puts it, “You don’t need a health bar to tell you that,” because the reaction itself communicates the information players need.

The decision to remove traditional HUD elements was not about making the game more hardcore or challenging. Instead, it was about trust: trusting that players can interpret visual cues, and trusting that physics can provide a meaningful alternative to UI indicators.


PvPvE Encounters Amplify the Need for Natural Feedback

ARC Raiders is not a typical shooter. It combines player-versus-player and player-versus-environment elements into a single experience where danger can emerge from any direction. In this chaotic landscape, players regularly encounter not only human opponents but also different types of ARC machines that dominate the world.

Because of this structure, the developers wanted combat clarity to come from the environment itself rather than from a cluttered interface. When players are fighting a machine, it should be obvious how much danger remains based on its physical condition, movement, or behavior — not a numerical bar floating above it.

This becomes especially important during encounters with larger machines like Wasps or Bastions. When a Wasp is shot in one rotor, it may wobble or dip. When two rotors are disabled, it may spiral downward or crash entirely. A Bastion taking heavy leg damage may kneel, stagger, or tilt under its own weight — clear signs that the machine is losing functionality.

The result is a form of visual storytelling during combat. Instead of waiting for a health bar to empty, players learn to read the situation from what they see happening on the battlefield. Every spark, every piece of debris, every stagger is a message.

One of the most interesting insights from Strandberg is Embark Studios’ commitment to trusting the player’s senses. He explains that humans naturally decode visual and auditory signals all the time. In the real world, people don’t need labels floating above objects to understand their state — they rely on context.

ARC Raiders attempts to bring that same natural decoding process into gameplay. The machines are designed to respond to damage in predictable but visually diverse ways. When a drone takes too many hits, its structural integrity visibly decreases. If players land shots on critical components, those parts may detach or malfunction.

This creates what Strandberg calls a “feedback loop,” where:

Instead of glancing at UI elements, players remain fully engaged with the world. This enhances immersion by keeping attention focused on the environment rather than the corners of the screen.

The development team created multiple layers of damage states, movement reactions, and environmental responses that work together to form a system of intuitive feedback. For example:

A major concern for any UI-light game is readability. Too little information can frustrate players, making combat feel confusing or unpredictable. But Embark Studios wanted to avoid that outcome. Their goal wasn’t minimalism for the sake of minimalism — it was immersion without sacrificing clarity.
