As the release of Battlefield 6 draws closer, new reports suggest that EA and DICE may be preparing one last big update for Battlefield 2042. First launched in 2021, Battlefield 2042 had a rough start and struggled to keep players engaged despite its futuristic premise. Over the years, however, DICE worked hard to improve the game with multiple seasons, patches, and refinements, slowly regaining the trust of its community. Even so, EA is ready to move forward, with Battlefield 6 scheduled to arrive in just under two months.

The excitement around Battlefield 6 has already started building thanks to its recent open beta. Featuring a modern-day setting and large-scale destructive combat, the game has been widely praised and could be a strong rival to Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 later this year. Battlefield 6 is also introducing a new battle royale mode, something fans have been requesting since the underwhelming Firestorm mode in Battlefield 5.

Before the series fully transitions to its next chapter, though, Battlefield 2042 might be receiving a farewell sendoff. Well-known Battlefield data miner Temporyal claims that one final update is in the works, featuring a new map set on Iwo Jima, three weapons codenamed The Prototype, KFS2000, and GM6 Lynx, plus the return of two classic air vehicles — the A-10 Warthog from Battlefield 4 and the SU-25TM Frogfoot from Battlefield 3.

Interestingly, this rumored update may also serve as a bridge to Battlefield 6. According to Temporyal, it will include new Pax Armata cosmetics, tying into the faction introduced in Battlefield 6’s single-player campaign. While the cosmetics themselves remain a mystery, their inclusion could encourage Battlefield 2042 players to make the leap to the upcoming installment.

The release date for this possible update hasn’t been revealed, but if it’s real, it’s expected to drop before Battlefield 6 officially launches on October 10. With the second and final beta for Battlefield 6 currently live, fans won’t have to wait much longer to experience the next chapter in the franchise — but this last Battlefield 2042 update could help fill the gap until then.
