Remedy Entertainment has officially rolled out a major new console update for Control: Ultimate Edition, bringing the acclaimed supernatural action game up to modern performance standards on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. The patch mirrors the PC update released earlier this year but introduces several console-exclusive graphical and performance upgrades that make this the definitive way to experience Control on modern hardware.
Originally launched in 2019, Control became one of Remedy’s most celebrated titles, earning praise for its mysterious narrative, striking art direction, and physics-driven combat. The Ultimate Edition, released in 2020, bundled the “Foundation” and “AWE” expansions into a single package. As of mid-2025, the game has surpassed five million copies sold and continues to attract new players thanks to consistent technical support and the announcement of a full sequel currently in development.
A Long-Awaited Free Update for Console Players
The newly released Version 1.30 update introduces the same suite of enhancements that PC players received in March 2025, including improved graphics options, performance tuning, and additional content. Among the headline features are three pre-order outfits—the Astral Dive Suit, Tactical Response Gear, and Urban Response Gear—now freely available to all players through the Central Executive Sector’s Control Point wardrobe menu.
In addition, the update reintroduces a special mission titled “Dr. Yoshimi Tokui’s Guided Imagery Experience,” complete with voiceover by Hideo Kojima. Previously locked to the PlayStation 4 Digital Deluxe Edition, the mission can now be unlocked by collecting the Dr. Tokui Tapes in the Research Sector’s Extrasensory Lab.
Major Technical Upgrades for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S
Both console families benefit from sweeping technical improvements. Players can now toggle “Unlock Frame Rate” mode and enjoy Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) as well as 120 Hz output on supported displays. The patch adds High Dynamic Range (HDR) rendering and upgrades the game’s Temporal Anti-Aliasing (TAA) for cleaner image quality and smoother motion.
PlayStation 5 owners receive further refinements with an updated 10-bit SDR pipeline to minimize color banding and full PSSR (PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution) support on the PS5 Pro. PSSR technology enhances edge sharpness, hair detail, and vegetation rendering, although Remedy notes it may slightly affect performance. The PS5 Pro version also sees improved texture and shadow filtering and higher-quality screen-space reflections in Performance Mode.
On the Xbox Series X|S, the update similarly unlocks frame-rate limits in both Quality and Performance Modes, while addressing minor issues such as grenade indicator refresh rates and improving sorting behavior for character and weapon mods.
Remedy’s Road Ahead
The update arrives as Remedy continues active development on Control 2, a full-scale sequel built on the Northlight Engine. Reports suggest the project carries a smaller budget—around $58 million USD—than Alan Wake 2, allowing the studio to achieve profitability faster while maintaining cinematic quality and physics-rich environments.
For existing players, this free patch offers the perfect excuse to revisit Control and witness its eerie Federal Bureau of Control headquarters rendered with cutting-edge visual fidelity. For newcomers, it’s arguably the best time yet to dive into one of the most distinctive action-adventure experiences of the last decade—now sharper, smoother, and more supernatural than ever.
