Exciting news has emerged for fans of one of PlayStation’s most iconic franchises. The long-awaited God of War television series, jointly produced by Amazon and Sony Pictures Television, has officially reached a new stage of development. According to a fresh report, cameras are expected to start rolling in Vancouver in March 2026, marking a significant milestone for the highly anticipated adaptation.

Casting Underway for God of War TV Series

Alongside the production update, it was confirmed that casting is actively in progress. This means fans might not have to wait too much longer to learn who will step into the role of Kratos—the Ghost of Sparta turned Norse warrior—and other key characters such as Atreus, Freyja, and Baldr. Given the popularity of the franchise, speculation about casting choices has been intense, with fans debating who could best embody the gruff yet layered persona of Kratos.

A Project with a Complex History

The God of War TV adaptation was first announced back in 2022, but its early development faced setbacks when several key team members left the project. In 2024, Amazon and Sony officially rebooted the effort, bringing in Ronald D. Moore, a veteran television producer known for his work on Battlestar Galactica, Outlander, and Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. Moore is collaborating closely with Cory Barlog, the creative director at Santa Monica Studio who has guided the video game franchise for decades. This partnership suggests that the series will remain faithful to the spirit of the source material while expanding it for television audiences.

During a panel at San Diego Comic-Con 2025, Moore revealed that the writing process for the show was well underway, with direct input from Barlog to ensure consistency with the established lore of the franchise.

What to Expect from the God of War Series

The show will reportedly focus on the Norse saga introduced in the critically acclaimed 2018 God of War reboot. While it won’t be a frame-by-frame recreation of the game’s story, viewers can expect to see many familiar faces and mythological figures, including Mimir, Freyja, and Baldr. The relationship between Kratos and his son Atreus is expected to serve as the emotional core of the narrative, mirroring the themes of fatherhood, redemption, and survival that made the 2018 game so impactful.

Although details remain scarce, Amazon Prime’s adaptation is rumored to balance epic battles with character-driven storytelling, ensuring it appeals both to long-time gamers and newcomers unfamiliar with the franchise.

Santa Monica Studio’s Parallel Projects

Interestingly, the God of War TV series isn’t the only project keeping Santa Monica Studio busy. In August 2025, a job posting for a combat designer hinted that another God of War video game might be in development. While no official announcement has been made, this suggests that the beloved franchise could be expanding in multiple directions at once.

The Road Ahead

Although there are still many unanswered questions—such as the exact premiere date, full cast lineup, and how closely the series will align with the games—the fact that filming is set to begin in early 2026 is an encouraging sign. For fans eager to see Kratos’ rage and wisdom brought to life on the small screen, the wait may finally be nearing an end.
