Grand Theft Auto Series Nears 500 Million Units Sold as GTA 6 Hype Builds

The Grand Theft Auto franchise is closing in on a remarkable achievement, with just 45 million more copies needed to reach a staggering half a billion units sold across all its games. This figure comes from Take-Two Interactive’s latest earnings report, which revealed that the series has sold 455 million units to date.

At the center of the excitement is Grand Theft Auto 6, now set to launch on May 26, 2026, following a delay out of its original 2025 window. Set in a contemporary reimagining of Vice City, the game will feature dual protagonists Jason and Lucia, drawing inspiration from the infamous “Bonnie and Clyde” dynamic.

It has been over a decade since the release of Grand Theft Auto 5 in 2013 — a title that has sold an incredible 215 million copies on its own, accounting for nearly half of the franchise’s total sales. GTA 5 has also generated approximately $10 billion since launch, setting records as the fastest entertainment product in history to reach $1 billion in revenue.

While GTA Online has kept players engaged for years and Red Dead Redemption 2 gave Rockstar fans a western epic in 2018, the focus is now squarely on GTA 6. With anticipation reaching unprecedented levels, the new game could be the push needed to take the series past 500 million units sold before the end of 2026.

Though Take-Two did not break down sales for earlier entries, it’s safe to say that classics like Vice City, San Andreas, and GTA 4 have each contributed significantly to the franchise’s success. Looking ahead, Rockstar is expected to release more trailers for GTA 6 — possibly including a narrated gameplay showcase — before the game’s release next year.

If the franchise maintains its momentum, reaching one billion units sold may not be a matter of “if” but “when.”
