Mafia: The Old Country is set to leverage the advanced hardware of the PS5 Pro right from day one, as confirmed by developer Hangar 13 and publisher 2K. This marks the franchise’s long-awaited return with its first mainline entry in almost ten years. Acting as a prequel to the original 2002 Mafia game, The Old Country takes players back to early 1900s Sicily to explore the rise of organized crime.
Although Hangar 13 acknowledged a new Mafia project back in 2022, it wasn’t until Gamescom 2024’s Opening Night Live that fans got their first teaser. A full reveal trailer followed at The Game Awards, generating plenty of excitement. Earlier this year, details emerged confirming that Mafia: The Old Country would feature a grittier tone, embracing the mature themes and brutal violence the series is known for. With the game’s launch just around the corner, PS5 Pro owners now have extra reasons to be excited.
Enhanced Visuals and Performance for PS5 Pro Players
In a recent update on social media, 2K and Hangar 13 announced that Mafia: The Old Country will be enhanced for the PS5 Pro at launch on August 8. Players with the upgraded console can expect smoother gameplay with support for 120Hz displays, Variable Refresh Rate, and a higher dynamic resolution across both Quality and Performance modes. The Performance mode, in particular, will target a consistent 60 FPS, even on the base PS5. As for pricing, the game will be launching at an attractive $49.99, making it accessible to a wide audience.
Unlike open-world entries in the franchise, The Old Country is designed as a tightly focused narrative experience. The story follows Enzo Favara, a young man forced to work in the sulfur mines of Sicily, who eventually finds his way into the infamous Torrisi crime family. To deliver an authentic atmosphere, the game will feature full Sicilian voice acting, with Stormind Games assisting Hangar 13 in bringing the setting to life.
Despite the high anticipation surrounding Mafia: The Old Country, it finds itself launching during a packed release window. Battlefield 6’s open beta will be running from August 7-10, which might steal some attention, but fans of the Mafia series will no doubt be eager to dive back into its rich, story-driven underworld this Friday.
