Supergiant Games has tempered expectations about the future of its beloved roguelike franchise. While Hades 2 has just launched its highly anticipated 1.0 version to critical acclaim and impressive player numbers, Studio Director Amir Rao has emphasized that a third installment is not guaranteed.
During a recent interview with popular roguelike content creator Haelian, Rao made it clear that Hades 3 is not currently in development. “It’s not preordained,” he explained. “It’s not something we secretly know right now or anything like that.” Rao further clarified that Supergiant operates with a “one project at a time” philosophy, preferring to devote full attention to its active titles rather than mapping out future sequels.
This stance highlights the studio’s unique development process, which Rao described as “the game is the design document.” Instead of locking themselves into long-term roadmaps, Supergiant refines its projects through public testing and direct community feedback. Hades itself evolved significantly from its original concept, and Hades 2 followed a similar path during its early access cycle.
Rao’s comments strongly suggest that Hades 3 is not currently part of Supergiant’s plans. However, with Hades 2 now officially out of early access, decisions about the studio’s next major project are likely looming. While ongoing patches for balance and bug fixes are expected, substantial expansions or DLC remain unlikely, as Supergiant has historically avoided post-launch content beyond soundtracks.
In the meantime, Hades 2 is proving to be a massive success. On the day of its 1.0 release, the game attracted 80,000 concurrent players on Steam, edging close to its all-time peak of 103,567. Industry estimates suggest that Hades 2 has already sold over 2 million copies during its early access period, and it continues to outpace the original Hades in sales momentum. For context, the first game has surpassed 9 million lifetime sales on Steam, setting a high bar that Hades 2 appears well on track to meet—and potentially surpass.
While the future of Hades 3 remains uncertain, Supergiant’s measured approach underscores its commitment to quality, creativity, and its community-driven philosophy. For fans of the series, that means the next chapter—whatever form it takes—will come only when the studio is fully ready.
