Xbox has teamed up with 8BitDo to launch a new limited-edition controller priced at $90, commemorating the 40th anniversary of the legendary game studio Rare. Known for iconic franchises like Banjo-Kazooie, Killer Instinct, and Sea of Thieves, Rare’s milestone is being marked with this special edition of 8BitDo’s Ultimate 3-Mode Wireless Controller.

The controller boasts multi-platform compatibility, supporting Xbox Series X|S, Windows PCs (both wired and wireless), and mobile devices via Bluetooth. This makes it a versatile addition for players who game across multiple devices.

Visually, the controller stands out with a striking color scheme: a deep blue body accented by yellow bumpers, golden D-Pad, and dark face buttons with yellow lettering. Rare’s 40th Anniversary logo is prominently displayed on the grip, making this controller a collector’s piece.

Beyond aesthetics, the controller includes Hall Effect joysticks and triggers for improved durability and reduced drift issues. It also features back paddles that can be re-mapped using 8BitDo’s Ultimate Software X on PC. Standard Xbox features like impulse triggers and vibration are present, ensuring no compromises in gameplay performance.

Each controller comes with a matching charging dock that connects via an included 8.2ft USB-C cable. A 3.5mm headphone jack is also built into the controller for wired audio support.

The launch of this controller comes amidst a turbulent time for Rare and Xbox. Following major layoffs and project cancellations earlier this year—including the shelving of Perfect Dark and Everwild—this release aims to bring fans something to celebrate. Gregg Mayles, a veteran developer who spent 35 years at Rare, also recently announced his departure.

In addition to the controller, Rare will be hosting in-game events in Sea of Thieves throughout August to mark the occasion. Whether this controller remains in stock for long is yet to be seen, but it’s already generating significant interest among fans and collectors.
