Dune: Awakening Director Discusses Crossplay and Console Release Plans

The long-awaited survival MMO Dune: Awakening continues to spark conversations among fans, especially regarding its availability across platforms. While the game is currently only playable on PC, Funcom has reiterated that console players will not be left behind. During a recent interview, Game Director Joel Bylos addressed one of the most pressing questions in the community: whether or not crossplay will be supported when Dune: Awakening eventually arrives on Xbox and PlayStation.

Bylos noted that crossplay is technically “no problem” for Funcom’s servers, but emphasized that the ultimate decision rests with Sony and Microsoft. The studio has the technical infrastructure to support a shared ecosystem across PC and consoles, but both platform holders would need to give the green light before the feature could be implemented.

Crossplay Depends on Platform Holders

Speaking to Wccftech, Bylos explained that Funcom is ready on its side, but crossplay depends on approval from console manufacturers. He pointed to a recent industry trend toward breaking down barriers, citing examples like Helldivers 2 and Gears of War: Reloaded, which launched simultaneously across competing platforms. This shift, he said, could give players hope that crossplay in Dune: Awakening will be possible when the console versions finally launch.

Console Versions Still in Development

Although the director stopped short of revealing a specific launch date, Funcom has previously stated that Dune: Awakening’s console release is expected in 2026. Bylos humorously suggested it might land around the same time as Grand Theft Auto 6, though he admitted that was more of a tongue-in-cheek remark than a hard timeline.

In addition to crossplay, Funcom is also exploring the possibility of private servers on PlayStation and Xbox, a feature already offered on PC. This would allow players more control over their survival experience in the harsh deserts of Arrakis, tailoring their gameplay to fit either cooperative exploration or competitive showdowns.

A Game of Highs, Lows, and Updates

Since its PC launch, Dune: Awakening has been both praised and criticized. The game has attracted a large audience thanks to its faithful recreation of Frank Herbert’s universe, yet it has also faced backlash for some of its more punishing mechanics. Certain updates have divided the community, with patches that satisfy some players while frustrating others.

Despite the controversy, Funcom has shown commitment to evolving the game. Regular updates have introduced balance changes, bug fixes, and quality-of-life improvements. Looking ahead, the studio’s roadmap indicates that at least two DLC expansions are planned for the first half of 2026, potentially arriving before the official console release.

What Comes Next

For now, players on PC will continue to shape the evolving world of Dune: Awakening, while console players must remain patient for further announcements. If Sony and Microsoft do approve crossplay support, the game could unite its community across platforms, bringing together PC, PlayStation, and Xbox players in one massive survival experience.

Until then, fans will have to wait for more updates from Funcom regarding the future of this ambitious MMO — a game that, much like the sands of Arrakis, is always shifting and full of surprises.
