Hollywood is gearing up for one of the most ambitious video game adaptations yet — and it just gained some serious creative firepower. Taylor Sheridan, the acclaimed creator of Yellowstone and Mayor of Kingstown, has officially joined Paramount’s upcoming Call of Duty movie as co-writer and producer, teaming up with director Peter Berg (Lone Survivor, Deepwater Horizon).

This collaboration brings together two of the most recognizable names in modern American action drama. Both Sheridan and Berg have built their reputations crafting gritty, realistic portrayals of soldiers, law enforcement, and moral ambiguity — themes that align almost perfectly with the tone of the Call of Duty franchise.

The film, currently untitled, is being developed by Paramount Pictures in partnership with Activision Blizzard Studios and Skydance Media, the production company behind hits like Top Gun: Maverick, Jack Reacher, and Mission: Impossible – Fallout.

🪖 Call of Duty Movie Finally Gains Momentum

Talk of a Call of Duty movie adaptation has circulated for years, with various creative teams attached and later dropped. The most notable early attempt came in 2018, when Sicario 2 director Stefano Sollima was reportedly in discussions to direct. That version, however, never made it past development.

Now, after years in limbo, Paramount’s new iteration seems to have found its footing with Sheridan and Berg leading the charge. The film will be live-action, aiming for a grounded, authentic military experience rather than a stylized or animated approach seen in other game-based films.

According to Deadline, Sheridan officially signed on to the project on October 30, 2025, following months of discussions between Paramount, Skydance, and Activision. His addition reportedly came at the insistence of Berg, with whom he shares a long creative history.

🎥 A Perfect Match for Call of Duty’s Tone

Taylor Sheridan’s involvement is particularly noteworthy given his reputation for capturing the raw, emotional complexities of warfare and duty. His work on Sicario, Hell or High Water, and Special Ops: Lioness has earned him praise for blending political tension, character-driven drama, and tactical realism — all of which align closely with Call of Duty’s storytelling DNA.

Peter Berg, meanwhile, brings decades of experience directing action-heavy, true-to-life military films such as Lone Survivor and Patriots Day. His ability to balance adrenaline-fueled combat with human emotion makes him an ideal choice for a Call of Duty adaptation that aims to resonate beyond just fans of the video game.

Together, Sheridan and Berg have already proven their synergy through collaborations like Wind River, and industry insiders believe their partnership could give Call of Duty the cinematic authenticity it needs to stand apart from previous game adaptations.

🔫 Skydance Promises a Blockbuster-Level Production

The film’s producer, Skydance CEO David Ellison, is reportedly a long-time Call of Duty player himself. In a statement earlier this year, Ellison promised the adaptation would be handled with the same attention to quality and realism that defined Top Gun: Maverick:

“We’re approaching this film with the same disciplined, uncompromising commitment to excellence that guided our work on Top Gun: Maverick, ensuring it meets the exceptionally high standards this franchise and its fans deserve.”

While official plot details remain under wraps, early reports suggest that the Call of Duty movie will draw inspiration from multiple entries across the franchise — combining elements of Modern Warfare and Black Ops into a new, cohesive narrative about global conflict, espionage, and the moral cost of war.

The movie will likely blend intense ground combat, elite special forces missions, and political intrigue, much like Sheridan’s own television projects.

🧨 A New Era for Game-to-Film Adaptations

With the success of video game adaptations like The Last of Us and Fallout, studios are more confident than ever in bringing game worlds to the big screen. If Call of Duty can capture even a fraction of the emotional depth and authenticity of Sheridan’s previous works, it could redefine what fans expect from game-inspired cinema.

No release date has been announced yet, but with production expected to begin in mid-2026, it’s likely the Call of Duty movie could hit theaters sometime in 2027.

For now, fans can look forward to a film that combines the cinematic realism of Lone Survivor with the moral grit of Sicario — all through the lens of one of gaming’s most successful franchises.
