As the release date for Ghost of Yotei draws closer, Sony and Sucker Punch Productions are ramping up excitement with fresh gameplay footage that highlights the game’s violent and cinematic combat system. The new video showcases one of the most imposing weapons in feudal Japan—the odachi, a massive greatsword that offers devastating reach and bone-crushing power.
While Ghost of Yotei promises a wide selection of traditional weapons, the odachi stands out as a fan favorite already. Its sheer size and weight make it slower than a katana, but the weapon’s ability to cut down enemies in just one or two strikes could make it indispensable for players who favor overwhelming offense over speed.
Odachi Combat in Action
The recently released gameplay clip, posted on PlayStation’s official YouTube channel, gives fans their first extended look at odachi-based combat. In the footage, protagonist Atsu charges across a field on horseback before leaping into battle against a group of five enemies. Drawing the odachi from her back, she delivers a crushing aerial strike that instantly fells her first opponent. What follows is a brief yet brutal encounter, featuring wide arcing slashes, bone-splitting overhead chops, and multi-hit combos that demonstrate the sword’s surprising versatility.
Though not the fastest weapon in Atsu’s arsenal, the odachi clearly has a place in Ghost of Yotei’s combat design. Its long reach allows players to control space and cut through multiple enemies at once, while its combos—ranging from three to four strikes—give players options for chaining attacks together.
A Diverse Arsenal of Traditional Weapons
Of course, the odachi is far from the only weapon featured in Ghost of Yotei. Previous reveals have confirmed that players will be able to wield both single and dual katanas, the yari spear, and the kusarigama, a deadly sickle attached to a chain and weighted ball. For ranged combat, the game will also offer multiple bow types and even primitive firearms, giving players strategic flexibility whether they prefer stealth, precision, or direct aggression.
Building on Ghost of Tsushima’s Legacy
Set to release on October 2, 2025, Ghost of Yotei is a standalone sequel to 2020’s critically acclaimed Ghost of Tsushima. While it introduces a new protagonist and a new region of Japan to explore, the game retains the brutal and graceful swordplay that defined its predecessor. Fans can also expect an expanded combat system, richer exploration, and a darker tone that emphasizes both cinematic storytelling and challenging battles.
What’s Next for Ghost of Yotei
Sony has confirmed that Ghost of Yotei will make a major appearance at Tokyo Game Show 2025, which begins on September 25. The title will be showcased alongside other PlayStation exclusives such as Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls and Astro Bot. With just weeks to go before launch, fans should expect more reveals—including additional gameplay footage and deeper looks at the arsenal—leading up to release.
With its combination of traditional Japanese weaponry, brutal combat mechanics, and cinematic presentation, Ghost of Yotei is shaping up to be one of the most anticipated action-adventure games of the year.
