Ghost of Yotei has made an explosive debut, selling more than 2 million copies within its first three days on the market and generating an estimated $140 million in revenue. The latest PlayStation 5 exclusive from Sucker Punch Productions, a studio under Sony’s umbrella, has quickly become one of the biggest game launches of 2025.
Released on October 2, Ghost of Yotei continues the studio’s signature open-world samurai experience that began with Ghost of Tsushima back in 2020. While early data suggests that the new title’s launch numbers are slightly below its predecessor, the game’s strong start indicates a similarly successful long-term trajectory.
Ghost of Yotei’s Impressive Revenue Figures
Reports circulating on social media—most notably from Stephen Lin, PlayStation China’s Director of Commercial and Sales Operations—reveal that Ghost of Yotei crossed the 2 million units sold milestone by October 5. If each unit were sold at the Standard Edition’s $69.99 price point, that equates to roughly $140 million in total sales revenue.
Because Ghost of Yotei is a first-party PlayStation 5 exclusive, Sony avoids paying third-party platform fees, meaning nearly all revenue flows directly back to the company. Considering the availability of Digital Deluxe ($79.99) and Collector’s Editions ($249.99), the actual earnings are likely even higher.
Development Budget and Profit Estimates
In a recent interview with Game File’s Stephen Totilo, Sucker Punch co-founder Brian Fleming revealed that Ghost of Yotei had a development budget similar to Ghost of Tsushima—around $60 million. That means the game likely recouped its full development cost twice over within its first week.
However, this figure doesn’t account for marketing and promotional expenses, which for a major Sony release can easily run into tens of millions. Even so, industry analysts suggest that Ghost of Yotei has already become one of Sony’s most profitable launches of the year, setting the stage for strong holiday season sales.
Comparing Ghost of Yotei to Ghost of Tsushima
At launch, Ghost of Tsushima sold 2.4 million copies in its first 72 hours, making it the fastest-selling original IP in PlayStation 4 history. While Ghost of Yotei’s opening weekend is slightly behind that pace with 2 million units, its performance on a newer console and within a more competitive gaming landscape remains impressive.
Sucker Punch confirmed that Ghost of Tsushima eventually reached 13 million lifetime sales, bolstered significantly by a successful PC port that added around 2 million new players. Although Ghost of Yotei has yet to be officially announced for PC, Sony’s recent track record—releasing major titles like God of War, Spider-Man, and Horizon on Steam—suggests that a PC version is almost inevitable.
What’s Next for Ghost of Yotei
With Ghost of Yotei already generating massive revenue and widespread attention, Sucker Punch may soon announce post-launch content, expansions, or multiplayer features similar to Ghost of Tsushima: Legends. Fans are also hopeful for future cross-platform releases and potential DLC that expands on the game’s world and lore.
While Ghost of Yotei’s debut numbers are just shy of its predecessor’s record-breaking start, its financial success within the first few days ensures that Sony’s latest samurai epic is already a commercial triumph—and possibly the beginning of another long-running franchise.
