Square Enix’s massively popular MMORPG, Final Fantasy 14, could soon be making its way to Nintendo’s next-generation console, the Switch 2, if recent comments from producer Naoki Yoshida are any indication. In a recent interview at Gamescom with VGC, Yoshida revealed that discussions with Nintendo regarding a possible port have been "positive," sparking fresh excitement among fans who have long speculated about the game’s debut on Nintendo hardware.
Rumors surrounding a Final Fantasy 14 Switch 2 port have been circulating since before the console’s official announcement in June, with players hopeful that the beloved MMO would eventually find a home on the hybrid platform. Yoshida emphasized that Square Enix is doing everything possible to bring the experience to more players, mentioning that even Final Fantasy 16 could be considered for a future Switch release.

Originally relaunched in 2013 as A Realm Reborn, Final Fantasy 14 has grown into one of the most successful MMOs of all time, boasting multiple award-winning expansions, a thriving community, and a steady revenue stream for Square Enix. Earlier this month, the launch of Patch 7.3 wrapped up the main Dawntrail storyline, giving the community a glimpse into the next chapter of Eorzea’s evolving saga.
Yoshida noted that the Switch 2 port of Final Fantasy 14 would allow players to enjoy the MMO in new and flexible ways. While hardcore raiders and dungeon runners might still prefer the raw power of a PC or PlayStation 5, Switch users could engage in more casual activities, such as crafting, gathering, or socializing — all from the comfort of their sofa. Yoshida also expressed excitement that the port could introduce the MMO genre to new audiences, as many Switch owners may never have experienced a large-scale online RPG before.
Despite its ongoing success, the game has recently seen a dip in active player numbers, partly due to the divisive reception of the Dawntrail expansion. However, MMO veterans know this cycle well: engagement often declines between major updates before picking up again with new story arcs and content drops. The Endwalker expansion in late 2021 was widely praised, and many expect the upcoming content to regain momentum for the community.
Adding to the excitement, Square Enix recently announced during Gamescom Opening Night Live on August 19 that Final Fantasy 14 will collaborate with Monster Hunter Wilds in a crossover event launching this October. Players can expect epic encounters, iconic creatures such as Chocobo and Cactuar, and special crossover quests. Meanwhile, FF14 adventurers at level 100 who have completed the Dawntrail main scenario will face the new boss Guardian Arkveld, ensuring plenty of challenges ahead.
With "positive" talks already in motion, the idea of Final Fantasy 14 arriving on Nintendo Switch 2 no longer feels like a far-fetched dream. If successful, this move could significantly broaden the MMO’s reach, opening Eorzea’s gates to millions of new players on Nintendo’s upcoming console.
