After years of anticipation, Team Cherry has finally given fans of Hollow Knight: Silksong the news they’ve been waiting for. Not only has the studio confirmed the long-awaited release date, but it has also revealed that players can expect post-launch DLC content to keep the adventure alive long after release.
During Gamescom 2025, Silksong took center stage with a brand-new gameplay trailer, fresh details, and confirmation that the game will officially launch on September 4, 2025. The announcement ended years of speculation, delays, and long stretches of silence, sparking new excitement within the Hollow Knight community. For fans who have been following since its reveal back in 2019, the wait is finally coming to an end—but Team Cherry isn’t stopping there.

Hollow Knight: Silksong DLC Plans Confirmed
In a recent interview with Bloomberg, co-founders Ari Gibson and William Pellen revealed that Team Cherry is already preparing additional content beyond launch. Interestingly, the developers admitted that Silksong’s origins as a DLC expansion for the original Hollow Knight ended up growing far beyond its initial scope. Over the years, the project expanded into a full standalone sequel.
Pellen explained that the team continuously added new ideas, mechanics, and features, to the point where the game ballooned in size and scope. "At some point, we realized we couldn’t keep adding forever," Gibson recalled. "Every new sketch or concept had to make it into the game, and if we didn’t draw the line somewhere, we’d still be working on it 15 years from now."
This constant flow of ideas meant that many features had to be shelved in order to get Silksong ready for release. But according to Team Cherry, those concepts aren’t gone forever—they will likely be revisited as downloadable content in the months and even years following launch. While exact details remain under wraps, the developers described some of these planned additions as “ambitious” but equally exciting.

Why the Long Development?
The lengthy development cycle has often been a point of discussion among fans. Originally pitched as a smaller project, Silksong quickly became much more than just an expansion. With its intricate world design, polished combat, and the introduction of new protagonist Hornet, the game simply outgrew its DLC origins.
Team Cherry emphasized that the drawn-out process was not due to problems, but rather the creative joy of adding new mechanics, enemies, and environments. The developers’ passion for experimentation meant the project evolved into something far bigger than expected. The positive side of this is that all the “leftover” content can now serve as the foundation for exciting post-launch expansions.
What Fans Can Expect Going Forward
Although no official roadmap for Silksong’s DLC has been revealed, the confirmation alone is enough to energize the community. Given the success of the original Hollow Knight—which became a modern indie classic thanks in part to free content updates—fans are optimistic that Silksong will follow a similar model.
With the release date set for September 4, players won’t have long to wait before diving into Hornet’s long-awaited adventure. And once they’ve experienced the base game, it seems clear that Team Cherry has big plans to keep the world of Silksong growing well into the future.
