The launch of Borderlands 4 has been a massive success for Gearbox Software, but one major issue has stood out for console players: the lack of a field-of-view (FOV) slider on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. While PC players have had this option since day one, console fans were left disappointed — but now Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford has hinted that change may be on the horizon.
Gearbox CEO Responds to Fan Demands
In a recent post on X (formerly Twitter), Randy Pitchford directly addressed the ongoing community feedback. He launched a poll asking whether console players wanted to see an FOV slider added to Borderlands 4. The response was overwhelming: more than 19,000 players participated, and an impressive 91.7% voted in favor of the feature, while just 8.3% said they didn’t care either way.
This strong reaction highlights how important the feature has become for modern shooters, especially in a game as fast-paced and chaotic as Borderlands 4.
Concerns About “Fairness” in Gameplay
Despite the clear demand, Pitchford added a note of caution. He explained that while he supports the idea in principle, he has “dreams… where an FOV setting might affect fairness.” He didn’t expand on what this meant, but many fans speculated that it could relate to competitive balance in potential multiplayer modes.
Interestingly, Borderlands 4 currently does not include a PvP mode in its post-launch roadmap, making some wonder why fairness is a concern on consoles when PC players already have an FOV slider without issue.
Why an FOV Slider Matters
For console players, having an adjustable FOV can dramatically impact the overall experience:
-
Better situational awareness during hectic firefights.
-
Reduced motion sickness, especially for players sensitive to narrower fields of view.
-
Consistency across platforms, giving console players the same customization options as PC players.
Given that Borderlands 4 is one of the most visually chaotic and loot-heavy shooters on the market, an FOV slider could significantly improve comfort and gameplay satisfaction.

Borderlands 4’s Strong Start and Ongoing Issues
Launched to stellar reviews — with a Top Critic Average of 85 on OpenCritic — Borderlands 4 has been praised for revitalizing the beloved looter-shooter formula. Fans have celebrated its diverse arsenal of weapons, improved narrative pacing, and chaotic co-op action.
However, not everything has been perfect. Beyond the missing console FOV slider, PC players have reported performance issues, including stuttering and frame drops. Gearbox has acknowledged these problems and promised patches in upcoming updates.
What’s Next for Borderlands 4?
With the overwhelming poll results in favor of an FOV slider, the ball is now in Gearbox’s court. Pitchford has yet to confirm if the feature will make it into a future patch, but given the passionate response from fans, it seems likely that Gearbox will at least explore the possibility.
For now, console players will need to wait and see whether their feedback turns into action. Regardless, the conversation highlights the evolving expectations of players in 2025, where customization and accessibility features are no longer seen as optional but essential.
