Final Fantasy 14 Players Criticize High Price of New Tactics-Themed Cosmetics

Square Enix has once again sparked debate in the Final Fantasy 14 community following the release of new Final Fantasy Tactics-inspired cosmetics on September 30. Intended as a celebration of the long-anticipated launch of Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles, the items were added to FF14’s Online Store — but many players quickly voiced concerns about their price.

The cosmetics include Ramza’s Attire, Ovelia’s Attire, Gaffgarion’s Attire, and a Final Fantasy Tactics Orchestrion Set, each available for individual purchase. The outfits are priced at $18 each, while the orchestrion set costs $15. On their own, these prices are in line with Square Enix’s typical premium cosmetics. However, the combined total of $69 before taxes left fans frustrated, as that figure actually surpasses the cost of Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles itself at launch.

Why Fans Are Frustrated

The backlash was particularly visible on the Final Fantasy 14 subreddit, where players pointed out the irony that purchasing all the cosmetics costs about $19 more than the newly released Tactics collection. For many, the pricing reinforces ongoing concerns about Square Enix’s monetization practices in FF14, especially as the MMORPG already requires both a subscription and frequent expansion purchases to keep up with new content.

The issue isn’t just the price tag, but also the perceived value of the cosmetics. While they faithfully recreate beloved character outfits, players note that the Orchestrion Set and attire bundles don’t offer gameplay benefits and can feel overpriced compared to the depth of the original Final Fantasy Tactics.

A Look Back at Tactics and Its Legacy

Final Fantasy Tactics first launched on the PlayStation in 1997, telling the story of Ramza Beoulve and Delita Heiral during the War of the Lions — a political conflict filled with betrayal, religion, and power struggles. The game earned a cult following for its tactical combat and narrative depth, later receiving a PSP-exclusive port titled The War of the Lions. Despite its popularity, the series remained largely absent from modern platforms until the 2025 release of The Ivalice Chronicles, which includes both the original PS1 version and an enhanced edition featuring voice acting and quality-of-life upgrades.

Cosmetics and Past Controversies

This is not the first time cosmetic pricing has stirred conversation in the FF14 community. In July, Square Enix released the Crystarium Rebel’s Attire, modeled after Alisaie Leveilleur’s look in the Shadowbringers expansion. While stylish, the outfit was criticized for being too similar to existing in-game gear, leading to discussions about whether new cosmetics are truly offering players fresh value.

Looking Ahead: Patch 7.35

Despite the controversy, Square Enix is moving forward with its FF14 roadmap. The MMORPG is preparing to launch Patch 7.35 on October 7, which will include new content updates alongside seasonal events. With Final Fantasy 14 continuing to serve as one of Square Enix’s biggest live-service titles, it remains to be seen how the developer will balance community expectations for premium cosmetics against the game’s subscription model.

For now, many fans are left wondering whether the next wave of store items will follow a similar pricing structure, or if Square Enix will consider more affordable bundles to maintain goodwill among its player base.
