Sony has officially confirmed that the PlayStation 5 has surpassed 80 million units sold worldwide, marking a major achievement as the console approaches its fifth anniversary. The announcement came during the company's Q1 FY25 earnings call on August 7, where the PS5's momentum was highlighted as it continues to gain ground on its predecessors.

According to Sony’s financial report, 80.3 million PS5 units have been sold globally as of June 30, 2025. This figure brings the console just 7.1 million units shy of overtaking the lifetime sales of the PlayStation 3. Sony also reported a slight year-over-year increase in PS5 hardware shipments, with 2.5 million units sold in the first quarter of FY25, up from 2.4 million in FY24.

Launched in November 2020 during the global pandemic, the PS5 faced major supply shortages due to high demand and chip manufacturing delays. Early units were heavily scalped, often being resold well above retail prices. Over time, Sony managed to normalize production and expanded the lineup with models like the PS5 Slim and PS5 Pro, offering consumers more choice and improved features.

The report also shed light on software performance. A total of 65.9 million PS5 and PS4 games were sold during Q1 FY25, up from 53.6 million in the same period last year. Digital distribution continues to dominate, with 83% of those sales being digital downloads—translating to 57.6 million digital units sold. However, the data also reflects a continued decline in physical game sales, aligning with broader trends across the gaming industry.

While Sony hasn’t revealed which PS5 model—original, Slim, or Pro—has sold the most units, the console’s growing popularity is evident. Some titles, such as Helldivers 2, are now reaching Xbox platforms, while others are making their way to PC, expanding access to the PlayStation ecosystem.

With steady growth, enhanced hardware options, and a strong digital market, the PS5 is firmly establishing itself as one of Sony’s most successful gaming platforms to date. As the console nears its five-year mark, it’s expected to continue building momentum, especially with anticipated software releases and system updates on the horizon.
