Electronic Arts has provided an important clarification regarding how crossplay will work in Battlefield 6, one of this year’s most anticipated first-person shooters. With the game set to officially launch on October 10, EA explained that console-only crossplay will not be possible, despite earlier statements suggesting otherwise.
Previously, fans were led to believe that turning off crossplay on consoles would still allow PlayStation and Xbox users to play together while excluding PC players. However, EA has now confirmed that this will not be the case. Instead, disabling crossplay will restrict matchmaking strictly to players on the same platform—meaning PS5 players will only encounter other PS5 users, and Xbox Series X/S players will only match with others on Xbox.

Crossplay remains a major feature of Battlefield 6. Keeping it enabled will allow matches to fill much faster, since the system draws from a larger pool of players across all platforms. For console users, enabling crossplay is optional, but for PC players, it will be permanently active by default. EA also reminded players that an active PlayStation Plus or Xbox Game Pass subscription is still required for online multiplayer.
EA noted that when crossplay is turned on, matchmaking will attempt to prioritize console-versus-console encounters before pulling in PC players, in order to reduce the skill and hardware gap that sometimes frustrates console users. This update also corrects an earlier statement from Ripple Effect producer Matthew Nickerson, who had implied that PlayStation and Xbox players could still play together with crossplay disabled.
One of the ongoing concerns surrounding crossplay in large-scale shooters like Battlefield 6 is the imbalance between PC and console play. PC users have access to higher frame rates, keyboard and mouse precision, and unfortunately, a greater likelihood of cheating software. EA emphasized that its anti-cheat tools are being strengthened to minimize unfair play and preserve competitive integrity across platforms.

Looking ahead, rumors continue to circulate about a potential Battlefield 6 battle royale spin-off or separate client. Whether crossplay rules will remain the same for that rumored mode is still unknown, but for now, EA is making sure players understand how crossplay will function in the core multiplayer experience.
With only weeks left before launch, these clarifications may help players decide whether to keep crossplay enabled or opt for a platform-restricted experience. Either way, Battlefield 6 is shaping up to be one of the defining multiplayer shooters of 2025.
