A newly released Atlus consumer survey is sparking speculation that the studio may be exploring the idea of a follow-up to Metaphor: ReFantazio, one of 2024’s most acclaimed JRPGs. The fantasy title, which launched late last year, was widely praised for its ambitious world-building and unique gameplay systems, earning an impressive 93 average on OpenCritic.
Unlike the Persona or Shin Megami Tensei series, Metaphor: ReFantazio was a completely new IP, leaving fans unsure whether its story would ever continue. However, the latest annual survey, spotted by Persona Central, includes a question asking respondents if they’d be interested in a “new game or sequel” for several Atlus franchises. Alongside established names like Persona and Etrian Odyssey, Metaphor: ReFantazio was listed—hinting that Atlus is at least curious about player demand.
This is far from confirmation of a sequel, and the game’s commercial performance may also play a role in any decision. After an explosive launch that saw one million copies sold on day one, sales slowed considerably, with current figures sitting at around 2 million units. Still, with a rumored Nintendo Switch 2 version reportedly in the works, the title could yet reach a wider audience and strengthen its chances for a follow-up.
Even if a sequel is greenlit, fans likely have a long wait ahead. Director Katsura Hashino previously stated in 2024 that there were no concrete plans for a second installment, and large-scale JRPG development often spans several years. In the meantime, Atlus is focusing on its other projects, with Persona 4 Revival expected to arrive sometime after April 2026, according to recent financial reports.
For now, fans of Metaphor: ReFantazio will have to watch and wait—but the survey’s inclusion of the game in future-planning questions is at least a small glimmer of hope.
