The Nintendo Switch 2 port of Borderlands 4 is set to arrive with a notable drawback: the game won’t include split-screen co-op on Nintendo’s new console. This limitation adds to a growing list of compromises that the Switch 2 edition of the highly anticipated looter-shooter will face compared to its counterparts on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S.
Borderlands 4 was first revealed at Gamescom 2024, with initial confirmation for PC and current-gen consoles. The Switch 2 version was later announced, sparking excitement among fans who wanted to experience the chaotic world of Borderlands on the go. While Gearbox has promised new vehicles, traversal mechanics, and its largest open world yet, the Switch 2 port seems to be coming with some caveats.
According to the game’s official FAQ (via Nintendo Life), split-screen couch co-op will not be supported on the Switch 2, though full crossplay across all platforms will still be available. While this decision isn’t entirely shocking given the hardware differences between the Switch 2 and more powerful consoles, it’s likely to disappoint players hoping for a traditional couch co-op experience.
This news follows earlier confirmation that Borderlands 4 will run at 30 FPS on Nintendo’s console, a detail that already stirred frustration within the community. To add to that, the Switch 2 version won’t release simultaneously with other platforms — it launches October 3, 2025, nearly three weeks after the September 12 release on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S.
Despite the setbacks, pre-orders for the Switch 2 version are live and include access to the “Gilded Glory Pack,” featuring exclusive Vault Hunter, Weapon, and ECHO-4 Drone skins. Still, some fans may hesitate, questioning whether the Switch 2 can deliver the full Borderlands experience.
Earlier this year, Gearbox Entertainment CEO Randy Pitchford praised the Switch 2, calling it “an incredible machine” well-suited for Borderlands 4 and its emphasis on connecting with friends. However, with mounting concerns over performance and missing features, it remains to be seen if the Switch 2 edition can truly live up to expectations.
