MachineGames Director Strongly Hints at a Third Wolfenstein Game

The Wolfenstein series, one of the cornerstones of the first-person shooter genre, may not be finished just yet. According to recent comments from MachineGames’ Studio Head and Game Director Jerk Gustafsson, fans could still have a third mainline entry to look forward to. While there has been no official confirmation from Bethesda or Xbox, Gustafsson’s remarks have reignited hope that the long-dormant franchise could return to wrap up its modern trilogy.

A Long Wait Since The New Colossus

The last full Wolfenstein release came in 2019 with Wolfenstein: Youngblood, a cooperative spin-off set decades after the mainline story. Before that, MachineGames released Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus in 2017, which followed B.J. Blazkowicz’s fight against the Nazi regime in an alternate-history America. Since then, the absence of a new core installment has left fans wondering whether MachineGames had moved on to other projects entirely.

With Indiana Jones and the Great Circle currently in development at MachineGames, many assumed the studio had quietly shelved Wolfenstein. However, a new Noclip documentary about the making of the series may suggest otherwise.

“Not Done With Wolfenstein Yet”

In the feature-length documentary, Gustafsson explained that the studio always envisioned its Wolfenstein titles as a trilogy. More importantly, he added that MachineGames is “not done with Wolfenstein yet” and still has “a story to tell.” While carefully worded, these comments strongly imply that at least the creative vision for a third entry exists, even if development has not officially started.

Interestingly, back in 2018, Bethesda’s Pete Hines confirmed the company was “absolutely” planning a third game. The years of silence since then have cast doubt on those statements, but Gustafsson’s recent remarks may be the clearest sign yet that Wolfenstein’s story isn’t over.

Canceled Projects and Development Uncertainty

Earlier in 2025, reports surfaced that MachineGames had quietly canceled an unannounced project between 2022 and 2024. Some fans speculated that this mystery title might have been Wolfenstein 3. However, given Gustafsson’s renewed comments, it seems more likely that the trilogy’s final chapter remains alive—at least in concept. The studio may simply be waiting for the right time and resources to bring it to life, especially with major commitments like Indiana Jones.

Wolfenstein Expands Beyond Games

Even if the status of a third game remains unclear, Wolfenstein fans do have confirmed new content on the horizon. Amazon is currently developing a Wolfenstein TV series, led by Maniac and Station Eleven writer Patrick Somerville. Jonah Nolan (Westworld, Fallout) is also attached, with MachineGames’ Gustafsson contributing to the project as well. This adaptation could help reignite interest in the franchise, potentially paving the way for renewed momentum on the gaming side.

A Cautious but Hopeful Outlook

For now, fans of B.J. Blazkowicz and his resistance fighters should temper expectations. Gustafsson’s words point to intent, but not confirmation, and no timeline for development has been shared. Still, the acknowledgement that MachineGames isn’t finished with Wolfenstein provides a glimmer of hope that the trilogy will one day be completed.

Whether the next chapter arrives in the form of a game, television, or both, Wolfenstein’s legacy remains firmly rooted in gaming history. If MachineGames does return to close out its reimagined saga, the wait could finally be worth it.
