For the first time in history, Gears of War has officially arrived on PlayStation with the release of Gears of War: Reloaded, a move that marked a dramatic turning point in the long-standing Xbox vs. PlayStation rivalry. However, recent reports suggest that the long-celebrated franchise is not performing as strongly as expected on Sony’s console, raising questions about whether the once-iconic Xbox exclusive has lost its impact in a changing gaming landscape.
According to data shared by Alinea Analytics’ Rhys Elliott, the PlayStation 5 version of Gears of War: Reloaded has sold approximately 259,000 copies, representing only 18.1% of the game’s total downloads. While this may seem like a respectable number, it falls well short compared to other Xbox-to-PlayStation releases such as Forza Horizon 5, which enjoyed significantly higher traction on Sony’s platform.

Why Gears of War: Reloaded May Be Struggling on PlayStation
Industry analysts point to several factors contributing to the underwhelming reception. First, Gears of War: Reloaded is a remaster of a nearly two-decade-old game, and while nostalgic for longtime fans, the gameplay loop feels outdated for modern audiences. The multiplayer experience in particular has been criticized as overly punishing for new players, with the infamous “shotgun-roll” combat loop creating frustration rather than excitement.
Elliott further suggested that the franchise’s introduction to PlayStation might have been more successful if Microsoft and The Coalition had chosen to debut with the upcoming Gears of War: E-Day instead, a fully new installment that could have generated more hype and excitement among a fresh audience.
Xbox Game Pass and Cross-Platform Competition
Another major challenge for sales is the Xbox Game Pass factor. Since Gears of War: Reloaded is included in Microsoft’s subscription service, a large portion of Xbox and PC players have opted to download it at no additional cost, rather than purchasing it outright. This dynamic has created a split in the player base and contributed to weaker sales on PlayStation, where Game Pass is not available.
What This Means for the Future of Gears of War
While the sales figures may be disappointing for Reloaded on PS5, the move itself represents Microsoft’s broader strategy of breaking down barriers between platforms. Even if this first PlayStation outing has not been a runaway success, it opens the door for future Gears of War titles to gain a stronger foothold among Sony’s massive player community. With the highly anticipated Gears of War: E-Day on the horizon, The Coalition may have a second chance to leave a lasting impression.
