Square Enix has delivered reassuring news for fans eagerly awaiting two of its most ambitious projects: Kingdom Hearts 4 and Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 3. According to series director Tetsuya Nomura, both titles are moving forward as planned, with development described as “progressing smoothly.”
The Next Chapter in the Final Fantasy 7 Remake Trilogy
The Final Fantasy 7 Remake project, which reimagines the 1997 RPG classic as a three-part saga, reached its second act in 2024 with the release of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth. That installment expanded the scope of the story dramatically, taking Cloud and his allies beyond Midgar into a richly detailed world enhanced with new textures, improved lighting, and expanded side content.
While Rebirth ended on a major cliffhanger, fans have been waiting for official word on the trilogy’s conclusion. During a livestream celebrating the second anniversary of Final Fantasy 7 Ever Crisis, Nomura confirmed that work on Part 3 is ongoing and “going smoothly.” He admitted that the project does not yet have an official title and has not been revealed publicly, but he also hinted that he knows when Square Enix plans to share more details with fans.
Updates on Kingdom Hearts 4
Nomura also addressed the status of Kingdom Hearts 4, which was first announced in 2022. Since its reveal trailer, news about Sora’s next adventure has been scarce, prompting comparisons to the long wait for Hollow Knight: Silksong. Fans had begun to worry about development delays, but Nomura reassured the community that Kingdom Hearts 4 “is progressing well and according to plan.”
Although he stopped short of confirming new gameplay footage, trailers, or release windows, the update itself is a relief to fans who have been eagerly awaiting a proper look at the game. Previous leaks hinted at new Disney-inspired worlds that could appear in Kingdom Hearts 4, though none of those have been confirmed by Square Enix.
What Fans Can Expect Next
The news has reignited hope that both games may appear at upcoming showcases. In particular, fans of Final Fantasy should keep their eyes on the Tokyo Game Show on September 27, where Square Enix is scheduled to appear. The company has already confirmed that its lineup will feature updates on titles like Final Fantasy Tactics – The Ivalice Chronicles and Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade. Whether Part 3 of the remake trilogy or Kingdom Hearts 4 will be included remains uncertain, but Nomura’s comments suggest more substantial reveals are on the horizon.
A Bright Future for Square Enix Franchises
For now, the development update serves as an encouraging sign for fans of both series. After years of delays and uncertainty across the gaming industry, confirmation that these two flagship projects are advancing on schedule is welcome news. Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 3 promises to deliver the climactic conclusion to one of gaming’s most beloved stories, while Kingdom Hearts 4 is expected to push the boundaries of Square Enix and Disney’s long-running collaboration.
Both titles remain without firm release dates, but fans can rest assured that progress is being made — and the next big wave of news might not be far off.
