After months of speculation, NetEase Games has finally confirmed how Marvel Rivals will perform on Sony’s previous-generation consoles, the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 4 Pro. While expectations were mixed about how a fast-paced, team-based hero shooter would run on aging hardware, the studio has provided technical details that give fans a much clearer picture of what to expect.
Marvel Rivals originally debuted in December 2024 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC, quickly attracting attention thanks to its unique blend of competitive gameplay and a roster filled with iconic Marvel heroes and villains. However, players who only owned older consoles were left waiting, unsure whether the game would ever make its way to last-gen platforms. That uncertainty has now ended, with NetEase announcing that the PS4 and PS4 Pro versions will officially launch on September 12, 2025.
Marvel Rivals on PlayStation 4
According to the official post, the base PlayStation 4 will be capable of running Marvel Rivals at 1080p resolution with a locked 30 frames per second. While not groundbreaking, this is still impressive considering the console is over a decade old. However, the developers cautioned that not all performance numbers have been fully verified and optimization work is still ongoing. Players should also prepare at least 40 GB of free storage space for installation.
Marvel Rivals on PlayStation 4 Pro
The PS4 Pro offers a more enhanced experience. Thanks to its additional power, Marvel Rivals is expected to run at 1440p resolution with 60 frames per second, essentially matching the standard performance mode that the game shipped with on PlayStation 5. This is a considerable upgrade compared to the base PS4 version and should give returning Marvel fans a smoother experience. Like the standard PS4, the Pro version also requires 40 GB of storage.
Timing with Season 4 Content
The release on PlayStation 4 comes at an ideal moment, coinciding with the launch of Season 4. Starting September 12, players can expect a wave of fresh content, including the addition of Angela as a new playable hero, an expanded battle pass, new arcade modes, and special in-game events. Later in the season, NetEase plans to introduce the K’un-Lun – Heart of Heaven map, along with a variety of new outfits, skins, and accessories.
Looking Ahead
While Marvel Rivals won’t hit the same technical highs as the PS5 or high-end PCs—which even feature a High Framerate mode capable of reaching up to 120 fps—it is clear that NetEase is committed to supporting last-gen players. For fans who have been waiting patiently, the PS4 release not only expands the game’s community but also ensures that Marvel Rivals remains accessible to a wider audience.
