Skyforge, the sci-fi fantasy MMORPG that’s been running for nearly a decade, is set to shut down for good later this year. Publisher Innova has officially announced that Skyforge will go offline permanently, with the console versions on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch scheduled to shut down on October 29, 2025. Meanwhile, the PC version will be taken offline earlier, on September 3.
Originally developed by Allods Team in partnership with Obsidian Entertainment, Skyforge launched on PC back in summer 2015, later expanding to PS4 in 2016, Xbox One in 2017, and finally the Nintendo Switch in early 2021. Despite its rough start with critics, Skyforge carved out a dedicated niche player base, even earning awards like "MMORPG of the Year" from MMOs.com during its early years.
Skyforge’s Gradual Exit Has Already Begun
While October 29 marks the game's final day on consoles, the shutdown process is already underway. As of August 1, Skyforge has been delisted from Steam and 4game.com, meaning no new PC players can download the title. Additionally, Innova has stopped accepting in-game payments, following the standard practice for live-service games preparing to sunset. However, existing PC players who have the game installed can continue playing until the servers go offline in September.
Console players, on the other hand, still have access to download the game for a few more months. This staggered shutdown across platforms reflects a declining player base, particularly on PC, where Skyforge has struggled for years. Recent data from SteamDB indicates that the game peaked at a mere 16 concurrent players on Steam in August 2025, a stark contrast to its more active early days.
Why Is Skyforge Shutting Down?
While no detailed explanation was given, it’s clear that dwindling player numbers and the high costs associated with maintaining live-service titles played a role in the decision. Skyforge had already lost its momentum on PC years ago, with the last peak of over 100 concurrent players dating back to 2022. Given these challenges, it seems the game’s developers have decided it’s no longer viable to keep the servers running.
Final Events Before the End
Despite the impending closure, the team behind Skyforge is planning a farewell series of in-game events, offering players a chance to enjoy special activities and experiment with different equipment before the final shutdown. More information on these “goodbye” events is expected to be shared in the coming weeks, with PC players likely to experience them first due to their earlier shutdown date.
Skyforge isn’t the only title reaching its end this year. At least four other online games are scheduled to shut down in October 2025, many of them operated by EA, signaling a tough year for long-running live-service games that fail to sustain their communities.
For longtime fans, Skyforge’s closure marks the end of an era. While its time in the spotlight may have faded, the game will be remembered by its dedicated players for its unique blend of sci-fi and fantasy MMO experiences.
