A recent industry rumor hints that Beyond Good and Evil 2 could be making use of Generative AI technology to help push its lengthy and troubled development forward. While Ubisoft has not officially confirmed the implementation of this technology, the speculation comes from a reliable gaming insider with a track record for accurate leaks.

First unveiled back in 2008, Beyond Good and Evil 2 has experienced one of the most prolonged development cycles in modern gaming history. After years of silence, the title reappeared at E3 2017 with a cinematic reveal, followed by another trailer in 2018. Since then, updates have been scarce. In 2023, the project suffered a major blow with the sudden passing of creative director Emile Morel at just 40 years old.

According to insider Nash Weedle, Ubisoft’s Montpellier studio has brought in specialists skilled in using Generative AI to create more dynamic NPCs. Weedle also claimed that development was briefly paused in early 2025, and that a potential title change for the game was discussed internally. Additionally, a new story trailer was reportedly completed but never shown to the public.

Generative AI use in game development has become a controversial topic, with many in the industry raising concerns over its potential to replace human artists, coders, and designers. Some developers have even adopted a “No Gen AI” label to assure players of their commitment to human-created work. Steam now requires games to disclose any AI-assisted content, with recent data showing that around 7% of titles on the platform already use the technology.

For now, it remains uncertain whether Beyond Good and Evil 2 will officially incorporate Generative AI—or if the rumors will turn out to be just another chapter in the game’s long, complicated history.
