At Gamescom 2025, Iron Gate Studios surprised Valheim fans with the reveal of a brand-new patch now available on the game’s Public Test Branch (PTB). The update, officially titled “Call to Arms” (Patch 0.221.3), adds one of the biggest gameplay mechanics since the launch of early access: Trinkets and the Adrenaline combat system.
Valheim first entered early access back in February 2021, quickly becoming one of the most successful survival games on Steam. Since then, Iron Gate has continued to refine and expand the Viking-inspired world through massive biome updates like Mistlands and Ashlands. With the next major milestone, The Deep North, on the horizon and a 1.0 release planned for Spring 2026, smaller patches like Call to Arms are giving players fresh reasons to return while the team finalizes the game’s ultimate vision.

The Big New Mechanic: Trinkets and Adrenaline
The centerpiece of this update is the Trinket system, which introduces a new layer of combat customization. Trinkets are special equippable items that tie into Adrenaline, a brand-new resource earned through active combat. Players can generate adrenaline by:
-
Striking enemies
-
Triggering Forsaken Powers
-
Using certain magical abilities
-
Landing Perfect Blocks and Perfect Dodge Rolls
Once the adrenaline meter is full, it triggers an Adrenaline Surge, granting a temporary bonus unique to the Trinket currently equipped. For example, one Trinket might enhance stamina recovery, while another boosts elemental resistances or critical strikes. This mechanic is designed to reward aggressive but skillful combat, pushing players to perfect dodges, blocks, and attack timing.
New Content Beyond Trinkets
The Call to Arms patch is more than just one new system. Iron Gate has introduced a huge suite of additional content:
-
New Enemies: The Bear and the nightmarish Vile now stalk the world.
-
Weapons & Armor: 18 new weapons, including the brutal Black Metal Battleaxe, plus wooden practice weapons that allow friendly sparring without damage.
-
Clothing Sets: Gear inspired by Bears and Viles, such as the Headdress of the Bear and Vilebone Visage.
-
Crafting Materials: Items like Ectoplasm, Vile Ribcage, and Bear Hide expand resource collection.
-
Food: New recipes, including hearty Bear Meat, add more variety to survival gameplay.
-
Trinkets: Over a dozen Trinkets such as the Crystal Heart, Evasion Mantle, and Resounding Shackle, each altering combat in unique ways.
The patch also brings practice dummies, archery targets, and decorative items like the Bearskin Rug, further fleshing out Valheim’s building and roleplay features.
Combat Overhaul and Balancing
Iron Gate has also taken this opportunity to rebalance combat and make the game more responsive:
-
Perfect Block no longer costs stamina, making defensive playstyles more viable.
-
Heavy weapons like Battleaxes, Sledgehammers, and Tower Shields now have reduced movement penalties.
-
Forsaken Powers have been reworked, offering buffs like increased stamina efficiency, improved carry weight, or boosted frost resistance.
-
Vertical combat has been improved, ensuring that players can more reliably strike enemies on uneven terrain.
These changes indicate a steady push toward polishing Valheim’s combat for its 1.0 release.
Server and Technical Improvements
Beyond gameplay, the update makes major quality-of-life improvements, especially for multiplayer. The server list system has been rewritten to improve retrieval speed, reduce redundancy, and handle larger player counts more efficiently. Platform-specific fixes for Steam, Xbox, and cross-play servers have also been included, ensuring a smoother cooperative experience.
Additionally, Valheim has been upgraded to Unity engine version 6000.0.46f, improving overall stability and paving the way for future updates.

What’s Next for Valheim?
The Call to Arms update is only available on the Public Test Branch for now. Based on Iron Gate’s previous testing cycles, fans can expect the patch to roll out to the live version within 10–20 days after community testing and bug fixes.
Meanwhile, players continue to eagerly await the Deep North update, which promises:
-
The game’s final biome
-
A conclusion to Valheim’s storyline
-
Overhauled combat mechanics
-
New NPCs and settlements
-
Official mod support on PC
With Call to Arms keeping the community engaged and The Deep North on the horizon, Valheim is clearly gearing up for a strong 1.0 launch in 2026.
