Overwatch 2 Permanently Retires Hero Mastery Mode in Season 19

Blizzard has announced that Overwatch 2’s Hero Mastery mode is being permanently removed from the game. The single-player feature, which challenged players with timed obstacle courses designed around specific heroes, will officially disappear with the launch of Season 19 later this year. Fans now have only a short window to complete the remaining courses before they are gone for good.

The Short History of Hero Mastery

Hero Mastery was first introduced in September 2023 during the mid-Season 6 update. It was designed as a solo experience, giving players an opportunity to refine their mechanics and master different heroes outside of the usual multiplayer chaos. Over time, Blizzard added a number of courses for multiple characters, turning the mode into a growing library of challenges.

Although some players appreciated Hero Mastery as a training tool or casual diversion, it never managed to gain the same level of popularity as staple game modes like Competitive, Quick Play, or the newly introduced Stadium matches. The lukewarm reception mirrored Blizzard’s earlier attempt with Hero Mastery Gauntlet, a cooperative spin-off that was also retired back in June 2024 due to lack of engagement.

Sunsetting Hero Mastery in Season 19

According to a recent forum post from Community Manager Kaedi, Hero Mastery will no longer receive updates, and all courses currently in the game will be removed once Season 19 launches — which is expected in late October or early November 2025.

Until then, players can still take part in the courses throughout Season 18. Blizzard is also offering some last-chance rewards as incentives for those willing to revisit the mode before it disappears:

  • Completing Mastery I and Mastery III will reward players with a free Epic Loot Box and an exclusive Player Title.

  • Players still have time to finish any of the Lifetime challenge rewards tied to Hero Mastery.

Once Season 19 begins, these opportunities will be gone permanently.

Why Blizzard Is Removing Hero Mastery

While Blizzard hasn’t provided a single definitive reason, the decision appears to be tied to player engagement and resource allocation. Hero Mastery has consistently lagged behind other game modes in terms of participation, and its removal will allow the development team to focus more energy on popular features.

The studio also noted that trimming down rarely used modes helps reduce visual and menu clutter, creating a cleaner user experience. In other words, Hero Mastery’s removal is meant to streamline Overwatch 2 while freeing up resources for content with broader appeal.

What’s Next for Overwatch 2?

Though Hero Mastery is ending, Overwatch 2 players will not be short on content moving forward. Season 18 already looks packed, introducing:

  • An overhauled Hero Progression 2.0 system

  • The brand-new Payload Race mode inside Stadium

  • A new support hero, Wuyang

  • And a highly anticipated Persona 5 crossover event, which will bring Phantom Thieves-inspired skins such as Joker and several other characters into the game

With these additions and ongoing updates, Blizzard appears to be focusing on features that are more engaging for the majority of the player base.

A Farewell to Hero Mastery

For many, Hero Mastery may not have been the centerpiece of Overwatch 2, but it offered a unique way to practice skills and enjoy the game from a different angle. Its removal marks another step in Blizzard’s evolving approach to how the hero shooter should grow and adapt.

Fans who want to experience Hero Mastery one last time still have a couple of months before the curtain closes permanently in Season 19. After that, the mode will be remembered as an experimental side feature that never quite found its footing but still left its mark in Overwatch 2’s history.
