Blizzard Finally Opens Up About Adding Loot Filters in Diablo 4

After more than two years of waiting, Diablo 4 players may finally be getting closer to one of the most-requested features in the game’s history: a loot filter. Blizzard has officially acknowledged that it is “talking about” adding a filter system, something fans have consistently demanded since the game launched.
Why Players Want a Loot Filter
Loot is the heart of Diablo 4, but at higher levels, the sheer volume of items dropped by enemies can quickly overwhelm players. Sifting through piles of weapons, armor, and accessories often becomes tedious, with many items proving useless compared to a player’s existing build. For years, players have pushed Blizzard to adopt a loot filtering system that would allow them to prioritize or automatically hide items they don’t want, saving time and frustration.
Until now, Blizzard has been resistant. The studio’s reasoning has largely been tied to game balance and the in-game economy. Developers wanted players to interact with all loot, scrapping or salvaging excess items to keep materials flowing and maintain progression pacing. Despite this stance, community demand for a loot filter never slowed down, making it one of the most talked-about quality-of-life requests in Diablo forums and social media.
Blizzard’s Latest Response
The conversation recently resurfaced in Blizzard’s Burning Questions video series on YouTube, where live-service design director Dan Tanguay addressed the issue directly. “We’ve definitely heard everyone’s feedback,” Tanguay said. “We’ve done some almost ‘smart filtering’ already and reached the limits of that approach. So we are talking about loot filters, but I can’t really say more than that right now.”
While this isn’t a full confirmation, it marks a significant shift in tone compared to previous responses. Earlier this year, Blizzard appeared hesitant to even entertain the idea, but Tanguay’s comments suggest that the studio is actively discussing potential implementations.
How Other Games Handle Loot Filters
The demand for loot filters isn’t unique to Diablo 4. Competing ARPGs like Path of Exile and its upcoming sequel Path of Exile 2 have already proven the usefulness of customizable filters. Players in those games can tailor their experience by highlighting only valuable drops, making farming more efficient while avoiding inventory clutter. Many Diablo fans argue that Blizzard risks falling behind competitors if it doesn’t adopt a similar system soon.
What’s Next for Diablo 4?
Although there’s no guarantee a loot filter will appear in the immediate future, the timing of Blizzard’s comments is noteworthy. Diablo 4 Season 10 launches on September 23, and the studio has been teasing several improvements to itemization and progression leading into the milestone. Whether a loot filter is formally announced during Season 10 or later, players now have a glimmer of hope that the feature is on Blizzard’s roadmap.
For now, fans will need to wait patiently, but one thing is clear: the conversation is no longer about if Diablo 4 will get a loot filter, but when.
