Mewgenics Release Date Confirmed: Indie Roguelite Cat Breeding Game Arrives in 2026

After more than a decade of rumors, delays, and development twists, Mewgenics finally has a confirmed release date. The long-awaited roguelite RPG from Edmund McMillen, best known for indie hits Super Meat Boy and The Binding of Isaac, is officially set to launch on February 10, 2026 for PC via Steam.

A Game 14 Years in the Making

Mewgenics’ story is nearly as strange as its premise. First announced back in 2012, shortly after the massive success of Super Meat Boy, the game was originally slated for a 2014 release. A playable demo even appeared at PAX East in Boston that year. However, the project went quiet as McMillen shifted his focus, eventually releasing The Legend of Bum-bo in 2018.

Fans feared that Mewgenics had been shelved indefinitely, but over the years McMillen teased concept art, early combat previews, and scattered updates. Finally, in 2024, he began sharing more substantial progress, hinting that the quirky RPG was inching closer to completion. Now, in 2025, the developer has confirmed that the long wait is nearly over.

February 2026 Release Date and Development Updates

In a 50-minute video update on YouTube, McMillen showcased multiple aspects of Mewgenics, including its tactical combat, feline character classes, and progression systems. He confirmed that “the big important parts” of the game are now complete, with the final stretch focused on polish and presentation.

According to McMillen, the team is working on:

  • Animating and scoring seven cinematic cutscenes

  • Adding smoother transitions, particle effects, and sound design

  • Refining UI and combat flow for better pacing

A limited test phase is planned for October 2025, though it will only be open to friends and developers rather than the public.

What to Expect in Mewgenics

Mewgenics blends turn-based combat with a unique cat-breeding system. Players begin with a team of cats, each with distinct stats, traits, and abilities. As they explore the outside world, they’ll battle bosses, collect over 800 items, and experiment with mutations that change both appearance and gameplay.

Outside of combat, the focus shifts to lineage and growth. Players can breed cats to pass down traits, expand their homes to house new companions, and experiment with combinations that lead to bizarre and powerful results. With more than 200 enemy types, six unique classes, and dozens of skill variations, Mewgenics aims to offer deep replayability wrapped in McMillen’s signature offbeat humor and art style.

Another Big Win for Indie Fans

The confirmation of Mewgenics’ release date adds to what has already been a huge couple of years for indie fans. With Hollow Knight: Silksong finally arriving in 2025 and Mewgenics set for early 2026, players have plenty of highly anticipated titles on the horizon.

While a true sequel to The Binding of Isaac may not exist, McMillen’s creative vision lives on through Mewgenics. It’s shaping up to be one of the most unusual, ambitious, and eagerly awaited indie RPGs of the next year.
