Speculation around Cyberpunk 2 has intensified, as a recent job posting from CD Projekt Red strongly hints that the sequel to Cyberpunk 2077 may include an online multiplayer component. The studio is currently seeking a lead network engineer to join its Boston, United States team, specifically to work on Cyberpunk 2. The role emphasizes designing and implementing network architecture and online systems, suggesting that online functionality could be a major part of the upcoming game.

While Cyberpunk 2 is still in the early stages of development, CD Projekt Red has been balancing work on multiple high-profile projects, including The Witcher 4 and ongoing updates for the original Cyberpunk 2077. Despite assurances that major updates for Cyberpunk 2077 had ended, the studio has continued to release patches. The most recent, patch 2.3, added new vehicles, side jobs, and quality-of-life improvements like an enhanced auto-drive feature and photo mode adjustments.

Multiplayer Potential in Cyberpunk 2

Fans have long speculated about online multiplayer in the Cyberpunk series. Although not officially confirmed, this job listing adds weight to the idea. The network engineer position calls for expertise in designing, implementing, and maintaining scalable and efficient network architectures to support online features.

Earlier this year, another role posting hinted at multiplayer possibilities, noting that the ideal candidate would develop gameplay systems capable of functioning in both single-player and multiplayer environments. Taken together, these listings strongly suggest CD Projekt Red may be revisiting multiplayer plans that were originally intended for the first Cyberpunk 2077, but shelved due to the game’s troubled 2020 launch.

A Look Back at Cyberpunk 2077

The original Cyberpunk 2077 was one of the most ambitious RPGs of its time, though its launch was marred by technical issues. Multiplayer was initially planned but never realized, as the studio prioritized fixing bugs and stability. With Cyberpunk 2, CD Projekt Red may finally have the chance to integrate online features properly, providing fans with a richer and more expansive experience in Night City or new futuristic environments.

While concrete details about Cyberpunk 2’s multiplayer are still unknown, this latest job listing offers the strongest indication yet that CD Projekt Red is planning to bring an online component to the highly anticipated sequel.
