Square Enix has confirmed that Dragon Quest 7 Reimagined, the upcoming remake of the beloved 2000 classic, will not include certain features from the original release and its later Nintendo 3DS version. According to series creator Yuji Horii, several optional areas and mechanics are being streamlined or cut entirely as the development team prepares for the game’s launch on February 5, 2026.

Content Removed From the Remake

While the core story remains intact, the new version will omit some side activities and scenarios. Notably, the casino system—a fan-favorite gambling mechanic—will not be returning. Other missing features include:

  • Immigrant Town (The Haven)
  • Monster Meadows
  • Excellence Grading Organization
  • Casino and gambling mini-games
  • Scenarios in El Ciclo, Grondal, and Providence

These details were revealed during a Tokyo Game Show 2025 livestream, where Horii explained that the removed elements didn’t play a central role in the main narrative. Instead, the team is focusing on streamlining the story to make the remake more accessible and less time-consuming than the original, which often demanded 100+ hours for completion.

A Modern Take on a Classic

When Dragon Quest 7 Reimagined was first unveiled at a Nintendo Direct showcase, fans were promised a rebuilt experience with modern visuals, enhanced storytelling, and full voice acting. By cutting certain nonessential areas, Square Enix aims to keep the heart of the adventure while trimming some of the slower side activities.

For instance, The Haven and Monster Meadows were optional hubs for recruiting NPCs and friendly monsters, while casinos mainly offered powerful prizes in exchange for tokens. Horii emphasized that their removal was designed to streamline progression without altering the central journey.

What’s Next for Dragon Quest Remakes?

While some longtime fans may feel disappointed about the absence of these features, there’s still plenty of excitement around the franchise. The release of Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake in 2024 has already set a strong precedent for modernized classics, with Dragon Quest I and II HD-2D Remake currently in development. Horii has also hinted that the Zenithian Trilogy (Dragon Quest IV, V, and VI) could eventually receive similar treatment.

Looking Ahead

With its updated graphics, voice acting, and narrative refinements, Dragon Quest 7 Reimagined is shaping up to be a must-play for fans eager to revisit one of the most expansive entries in the series. Even without the casino and other side content, the game still promises a massive adventure when it arrives in early 2026.
