Fallout 76 Devs Confirm Crossplay Is Still Unlikely Despite Ongoing Fan Requests

Fans of Fallout 76 may want to lower their expectations when it comes to crossplay support. According to the game’s creative director John Rush and production director Bill Lacoste, the long-requested feature remains off the table for now. The comments came as the development team gears up for the game’s next major expansion, the Burning Springs update, scheduled to arrive later this year.
Rush explained that while crossplay and cross-progression have become increasingly popular across the gaming industry, Fallout 76 was not originally designed with these systems in mind. Implementing them now would require a massive overhaul of the game’s infrastructure. Lacoste echoed this sentiment, noting that features like crossplay need to be planned early in development — not retrofitted years later.
However, Rush didn’t completely shut the door on the idea. He emphasized that the topic comes up regularly within the team, saying, “It’s not a hard no, but it’s definitely not a yes.” This cautious phrasing leaves a glimmer of hope that the developers might revisit the idea in the future, though it’s clearly not a current priority.
Instead, Bethesda Game Studios seems focused on delivering fresh content to keep the Fallout 76 community engaged. The upcoming Burning Springs update promises to add new regions, storylines, and a bounty-hunting system centered around The Ghoul, the fan-favorite character from Prime Video’s Fallout TV adaptation. Early impressions from players who’ve previewed the update have been largely positive, with many praising its narrative depth and improved mission design.
While the lack of crossplay may disappoint some, the steady stream of new content shows that Fallout 76 is far from being abandoned. Six years after launch, the game continues to evolve, expanding its world and player experience even without every fan-requested feature.
