Final Fantasy 14 Port for Nintendo Switch 2 Reportedly Becoming More Likely

Square Enix’s acclaimed MMORPG Final Fantasy 14 may finally be making its way to Nintendo’s next console. New reports and subtle developer comments are fueling speculation that Final Fantasy 14 could be headed to the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2, marking the franchise’s long-awaited debut on a modern Nintendo system.

Although Final Fantasy 14 has been available on multiple platforms for years—including PlayStation, PC, and most recently Xbox—Switch players have been left waiting. Now, after more than a decade of fan requests, that might finally be changing.

Square Enix’s Hints Point Toward a Switch 2 Version

During a recent developer Q&A session, producer and director Naoki Yoshida (Yoshi-P) addressed questions about potential new platforms for Final Fantasy 14. While he stopped short of confirming anything official, Yoshida mentioned that Square Enix was “closely watching new hardware developments” and expressed a desire to bring FF14 to “as many systems as possible so everyone can enjoy Eorzea together.”

This statement mirrors earlier comments from the Final Fantasy 14 team, who previously revealed they were in discussions with Nintendo about porting the game to a future console. Considering that the Switch 2 is expected to feature hardware comparable to a PlayStation 4 or even higher, it would finally have the power needed to run the MMO smoothly—a key reason the original Switch never received a port.

Why the Switch 2 Port Makes Sense Now

Nintendo’s upcoming hybrid console, rumored to release in mid-2025, has reportedly been shown behind closed doors to developers at Gamescom 2024. Early reports suggest the new hardware supports DLSS upscaling and advanced CPU/GPU performance, bringing it much closer to the hardware standard Final Fantasy 14 requires.

A Switch 2 version of Final Fantasy 14 would make perfect sense from both a business and community standpoint. The game’s Dawntrail expansion, released earlier this year, ushered in a massive graphical overhaul that optimized the game for scalability—making it far easier to port to different systems. Yoshida also emphasized Square Enix’s continued focus on cross-play support between all platforms, which the Switch 2 could easily take advantage of.

Fans Are Hopeful for a Portable Eorzea Experience

The idea of exploring Eorzea on the go has excited many fans. Final Fantasy 14 already offers one of the most inclusive communities in gaming, and adding the Switch 2 would only expand that reach. Players could log in, manage their retainers, or run dungeons while traveling—something long requested by MMO fans who prefer portability.

Industry insiders have noted that Square Enix’s ongoing collaboration with Nintendo could extend beyond this single project. With Final Fantasy 7 Remake now on multiple platforms, the publisher appears eager to strengthen its ties to Nintendo once again after years of focusing on PlayStation and PC.

Although Square Enix has not made an official announcement yet, insiders claim that Final Fantasy 14’s Switch 2 version could arrive sometime after the new console’s launch window, possibly in early 2026. Until then, fans will have to wait for an official reveal—potentially during one of Square Enix’s planned showcases next year.
