Capcom used its Tokyo Game Show 2025 showcase to drop an exciting new trailer for Onimusha: Way of the Sword, the long-awaited return of the classic samurai action franchise. While past teasers emphasized the game’s fast-paced swordplay, this latest preview places heavier focus on Miyamoto Musashi’s story, his legendary duels, and the colorful cast of characters who will shape his journey.

A Legendary Swordsman Returns

As the central protagonist, Musashi wields his trademark blades with deadly precision, but the new footage also highlights the mysterious demonic gauntlet that grants him supernatural powers. Mastering its abilities won’t be a solo endeavor—Musashi will need the help of new allies to face demonic threats and uncover the true balance between human strength and cursed power.

Allies and Historical Figures

The trailer introduces several companions who guide Musashi on a path of both combat and self-discovery. Among them are Izumo no Okuni, the pioneer of kabuki theater, and Ono no Takamura, a scholarly figure reimagined as another gauntlet bearer. Their presence deepens the game’s blend of history and fantasy, reflecting Capcom’s intent to root Way of the Sword in late 16th and early 17th century Japan.

A Rivalry Rekindled

Of course, no Musashi tale would be complete without his most famous rival. The trailer confirms the appearance of Sasaki Kojiro, also known as Ganryu, who steps into the role of a formidable boss fight. A follow-up narrative segment revealed during the presentation hints at Kojiro’s corrupted form, which TGS attendees can experience firsthand in a special playable demo.

Reviving the Onimusha Legacy

The Onimusha series once dominated the early 2000s with four mainline entries before fading into dormancy after 2006. Momentum began shifting with the remaster of Onimusha 2: Samurai’s Destiny earlier this year, which renewed fan enthusiasm and introduced newcomers to the franchise. Capcom’s promise of a full revival in 2026 with Way of the Sword signals the start of a new era for the franchise.

With its combination of historical authenticity, supernatural intrigue, and classic hack-and-slash combat, Onimusha: Way of the Sword is shaping up to be one of Capcom’s most ambitious revivals yet. Fans eager to follow Musashi’s story—and clash with Kojiro once more—will only need to wait until 2026 for the journey to begin.
