Marvel Rivals Faces Backlash Over New Ranked Matchmaking Restrictions
Published on 05:11 AM, Sunday, August 3, 2025 by miladmim
NetEase has revealed a significant change to the matchmaking system in Marvel Rivals, and the community’s reaction has been far from positive. The upcoming adjustment will restrict how many players can queue together in ranked matches, particularly affecting high-ranking squads. This controversial change is scheduled to go live with the launch of Marvel Rivals Season 3.5 on August 8.
Since its debut, Marvel Rivals has kept players engaged through constant updates, new characters, and exciting Team-Up mechanics. Season 3, which started on July 11, introduced Jean Grey (Phoenix) as a playable character, added a new map named Klyntar: Celestial Husk, and featured thematic content surrounding Knull, the god of symbiotes. Team-Up abilities have also been expanded, offering dynamic combos like Phoenix and Wolverine’s joint attack, as well as new synergies for Human Torch.
However, as the game approaches the midpoint of Season 3, one of the announced changes has stirred up significant community frustration.
High-Rank Players Limited to Smaller Squads in Ranked Matches
With Season 3.5, Marvel Rivals will introduce new matchmaking rules specifically for ranked play. Players in Bronze, Silver, and Gold tiers will still be allowed to queue as a full five-person team. But those who reach Platinum, Diamond, or Grandmaster will be limited to three-person squads. The restrictions become even tighter for the game’s top tiers — Celestial, Eternity, and One Above All — where players will only be able to queue with a maximum of two teammates.
The intention behind this change is to reduce the impact of large pre-made groups dominating the ranked ladder. However, many in the community feel this approach punishes players who enjoy playing with their full squad. A Reddit post highlighting these changes sparked hundreds of comments, with many expressing disappointment. Critics argue that limiting squad sizes will discourage team play, promote the use of smurf accounts, and detract from the cooperative spirit that defines Marvel Rivals.
New Content in Season 3.5: Blade Joins the Roster
Despite the backlash, Marvel Rivals fans still have plenty to look forward to in the upcoming update. Season 3.5 will officially add Blade as a playable character, expanding the game’s roster of iconic heroes. Blade will feature new Team-Up mechanics alongside Moon Knight and Cloak & Dagger, adding fresh tactical options for players.
Additionally, Adam Warlock and Luna Snow will receive a unique Team-Up ability, giving players new strategic opportunities in matches. Cosmetic enthusiasts will also be excited to hear about a free symbiote-themed skin for The Thing, available as part of the Season 3.5 update.
The Community Awaits Further Clarifications
While NetEase aims to balance competitive integrity with the new matchmaking system, many players hope the developers will reconsider or adjust these restrictions based on community feedback. With Season 3.5 just around the corner, it remains to be seen how the changes will impact the overall ranked experience in Marvel Rivals.
For now, all eyes are on August 8, when players will get to experience these updates firsthand.
